Oil paintings of birds & trees inspired by songs & stories from my life.

I grew up sitting at the last table of my mom’s ceramic shop.

I was all of 5-years old, and usually playing with a piece of greenware, sanding the mold seams and carving my initials into the bottom.

When we would walk into the studio, she would turn on the lights and sort the cash register. The first thing I would do is push a chair to the shelf, get on my tippy toes, and turn on the radio.

I couldn’t start the day without music.

In fact, I still can’t start the day without music.

It’s the golden thread of my days, my life, and my memories.

The stage was set then. I created, while absorbing the songs into my soul.

It’s the deepest place I can access my memories.

When I realized that this is how I create art now – it felt electric!

Primadonna✨

I had no idea hummingbirds were so noisy.

We recently put two new feeders off of our deck, and within an hour we had a few new friends.

They buzz at lighting speed and fly in unison with each other like synchronized swimmers.

I have noticed that we have one in particular that will sit on the string of lights and just hangout, as if it wants us to just stare at it.

Perched in perfect position for all to see while waiting for the spotlight.

How Did I Get Here…And What’s Next✨

My children are moving through the world at lightning speed. It’s so wonderful to witness, but it will also take me a minute to get use to the new cadence of the house (and let’s be honest - there’s no shame in my crying, in fact I got tearful when the garage repairman asked me how I was doing this morning.)

As I walked in the door late last night, I was grateful to return to the place that nurtured our family.

Lots of love in these walls.

What’s next for me?

Well, speaking of walls, I’m really touched that I’ve been asked to hang my art at Bryn Mawr Hospital!

A huge Thank You to the Bryn Mawr Hospital’s Women’s Board for the invitation. The primary goal is to beautify the lobby and bring the healing benefits of art to the patients, staff and visitors. 20% of sales are donated back to Bryn Mawr Hospital via the Women’s Board.

The show hangs September 20th through the end of the year! (pinch me!)

How Did I Get Here…And What’s Next✨

I had a conversation with a friend recently and the question:
why do we matter?
came up.

While painting this large piece, I’ve found myself down a rabbit hole thinking about it.

It’s a tricky one.

On the surface it seems so obvious; we all have unique qualities and traits that make us who we are.

Pretty standard answer.

But if we peel back the layers, and really understand how beautiful our blueprint is, it can be overwhelming.

There is no one else like you or me.

We are the only ones.

Each one of us like a puzzle piece – unique in shape and size and ready to be connected to the other pieces to create a big, beautiful life.

The Eagles got their Super Bowl rings this week and inscribed in them is:

“You Can’t Be Great Without The Greatness of Others”

So, whatever you’re doing out in the word, keep going.

Because we all need each other ❤️

Fly Like An Eagle🦅

In the 70’s we shopped at Sears.

On the weekends I wore hand me down “tough skins” pants from my brothers – they were the perfect thing to wear for playing and doing yard work.

By the time I wore them the knees had patches sown on to them.

My older brothers were always rough housing or playing sports.

Many times, I found myself in the soccer goal or under the basketball hoop retrieving balls.

There were only 6 channels to watch on tv at that time, and my dad was in charge of the sports schedule in the house.

Sundays in the fall, football was on, and of course, Monday night too.

At the time, I didn’t understand football, but I just loved the ritual of being in the family room with my dad and brothers watching the Eagles games.

“I want to fly like an eagle
to the sea

Fly like an eagle,
let me spirit carry me”

Looking back now, I not only appreciate the football time together, but the way they made me feel like I was part of the team.

I’m grateful for football (GO BIRDS!) and the way my dad prepared me to take flight repeatedly in my life.

Looks Like We Made It🙌

A few months before we were expecting our first baby in 2000,we took a trip to Martha’s Vineyard.

We stayed at an adorable bed and breakfast, and planned out a few things we wanted to see on the island.

And it worked!

Whoa, babe, we made it”

We exhaled.

Made our way back onto the road and silently rode home.

Somebody was definitely looking out for us!

The Power of Art🙌

It was the summer of 2017, and I was looking at Instagram, when I felt my heart skip a beat.

One of my favorite artists was in the process of painting a place that is very near and dear to me.

I knew instantly it was my painting.

But let’s be honest.

It was a giant piece, and I didn’t have that kind of budget for art.

And it sold at an outdoor show.

Ironically the artist was from my town and we were slowly becoming friends; lunch meet ups and heartfelt conversations (truth be told...I was a little obsessed with her, in a good way!)

A year later at lunch she told me she told me she got the painting back, they had changed their mind, and it was available.

WHAT?!?!

That painting was a view of Kennebunkport. The town I grew up visiting. The place my grandmother was born and raised. The spot that we have walked for generations.

It was a legacy piece.

I felt very emotional when I thought about it living somewhere other than my house.

But it wasn’t in our plan, and I had to move on.

About 3 weeks later, my very sneaky husband and the incredibly talented artist, Teresa Haag, hatched a plan to surprise me.

I came home from Target with my daughter and the painting was hanging over my couch.

It was home!

Lots of tears and “I can’t believe it!” was said repeatedly for more than a month.

I look at it every day.

It makes me remember that place with joy, love, and gratitude.

It’s become such a valuable part of my life.

My future self is so grateful that my husband also knew in his heart of hearts that the paintings was ours.

Sometimes you have to make the big leaps even when it feels scary.

And the answer, for right now, is yes.

The first show I was in (25 Days of Minis) I painted all birds.

Birds because they reminded me of my mom. She loved them!

And discovering them through brushstrokes made me feel closer to her.

It wasn’t until last winter, that I realized why I painted trees.

I was sitting in my studio, looking at a wall of new tree paintings I had just finished. And they felt so natural with the birds mixed in between them on the shelves.

And then I realized....those sturdy trees felt like my dad.

Anchored into the ground making me feel safe.

Gosh, I feel so lucky that I not only get to create what lights me up, but each painting brings me peace, and that is priceless.

I can remember being in college and feeling like I was never going to get through all of my work each semester.

The weeks would drag and the weekends fly by.

Sunday’s were spent in the library worrying more than actually getting my work done.

That feeling never went away, really.

As a mom, I worried about the next day before I even put the kids to bed.

Never understanding how to truly be present.

And it was exhausing.

“I’m starting with
the man in the mirror

I’m asking him to
change his ways”

So I started to dig deeper. What’s wrong with me? Is this normal?

And of course it is.

Little by little I read books, listened to experts, and started to talk to someone.

Happiness is an inside job.

It’s no one else’s responsibility to make me happy.

“If you wanna make
the world a better place

Take a look at yourself
and then make a change”

I’m not perfect, but I’m aware.

And it’s made all the difference.

Our mudroom door was always filled with drawings, paintings, and coloring book pages colored in crayon.

Couldn’t walk past the fridge without bumping into some artwork hanging on with a magnet.

I’m a girl mom.

The craft cabinate was always stocked with goodies and the marker tubs were used daily.

Legos and Littlest Pet Shop animals took center stage on our fireplace harth. And they would get lost in creating cities with these tiny creatures.

Even now, as adults, I see the excitement in their eyes when the markers come out of the craft cabinet ❤️

It’s true, I’m a little obsessed with hummingbirds.

They stop me in my tracks.

And sometimes take my breath away.

I can sit and watch for hours.

And I get lost in painting them.

I never knew that cardinals were considered “messengers” from our loved ones, that are no longer here, until I started painting them.

Super excited to be a new artist this year!!

I spent the bulk of last week painting this guy.

It was all sketched out and my pallet had freshly squeezed paint ready to go!

And then I procrastinated.

It took me 24 hours to get the courage to pick up the brush and make the first mark.

Life isn’t linear and neither is painting.

My pieces usually start off strong, then I hit the “messy middle” and wonder why I even started.

Questioning almost every aspect of what I’ve done.

Kind of like going on a long run, and negotiating with yourself to turn around shortly after starting, because no one will know how far you went anyway.

This piece took me on many twists and turns. To the point that I had to just sit in a chair and look at it from different directions.

And then I remembered, just turn off your brain.

Get lost in the process and stop overthinking.

And that I did.

It’s in the ups and downs that I find quiet confidence to keep moving forward.

When I look at art, I’m always drawn to the negative space.

The empty area around and between the main subject of a piece.

In my paintings I intentionally leave negative space.

So the eye has space to rest.

That quiet area feels so necessary in life.

A place to pause and not rush.

Kind of like “summer Friday’s” at work, when you can leave at noon, or a weekend with no plans.

This piece is headed to the Historic Yellow Springs Show in April (more info to come).

Here’s to the places of rest in art and life! 🙌

☀️Here Comes The Sun☀️

I heard the birds chirping when I woke up this morning.

And the sun is coming up a few minutes earlier every day.

The outside Christmas lights came down last weekend and we walked the dog without his little coat.

I really never liked winter, other than the holiday season.

It’s too cold and dark.

I like the sun and bright days.

But this year, I didn’t mind being inside more. Hunkered down, if you will.

It gave me time to rest, create, and recharge.

Some seasons I’ve been completely off the grid to the outside world while processing grief. The winter after I lost my dad, I tore my meniscus, and was on the couch for 12 weeks.

I felt so bad about myself “sitting on the sidelines” and not “doing” more.

But sometimes just being is everything.

It’s never the big actions that make the difference, but the tiny baby steps.

And those little steps add up to the real change.

The winter season is almost over.

And the clocks will spring ahead to give us more light.

“Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say, it’s alright”

Sometimes all I ever needed was a little more sun to make me feel hopeful at the end of a dark season.

Last week I attended a mastermind art retreat.

Ten artists from all over the country.

Different backgrounds, talents, and life experiences.

We dug deep, opened up about our goals, and started a new 6-month journey together.

I hold the thought that: anything is possible.

And if I’m honest, the only thing holding me back is me and the fear of failing.

Most days it’s smooth sailing. I’m good at sticking to my schedule and checking off my tasks.

Until fear creeps in and I start to doubt myself.

While I was at the retreat my daughter sent me this picture - she had just skydived over the Swiss alps!! (I’m so glad she didn’t tell us ahead of time!)

The look of accomplishment and pride on her face was palpable!

I know she was scared, but she told me, “I wanted to try something new”

So here’s to trying new things, even when were are scared, because, anything is possible!!

Happy 2025🎊

I don’t know about you, but I ease into January. Settling into the new year with intention and focus.

December always feels like a marathon, in a good way, and I’m grateful for the fun and excitement of the holidays.

My youngest just left yesterday for her semester in Italy - super excited for her, but missing her already.

Before she left I finished my first painting of the year. It is still wet and sitting my the easel. It’s headed to the Yellow Springs Art Show in April 😉

I’ll be working on a few commissions this month and painting for spring art shows.
